Carpenter Ant Control Sydney
Large black ants nesting in the timber of your Sydney home need the nest destroyed, not just the trail sprayed. We locate the parent nest, treat it with a non-repellent product the workers carry back, and correct the moisture that drew them in. Licensed technicians and guaranteed work.
What Carpenter Ants Do to Sydney Homes
Carpenter ants are among the largest ants you will find around a Sydney property, and they earn their name from the way they treat timber. They chew galleries and tunnels into wood to build their nest, and the tell-tale sign is a small pile of what looks like sawdust, called frass, building up below a skirting, a window frame or a deck joist. That frass is a mix of wood shavings, soil and insect remains that the ants push out of the nest as they excavate.
Here is the point that catches many homeowners out. Carpenter ants do not eat timber the way termites do. They cannot digest cellulose, so they only tunnel through wood to hollow out living space for the colony. Their diet is actually other insects and the sweet honeydew produced by aphids and scale in the garden. The damage comes from excavation, not feeding, which is why the galleries are smooth and clean rather than packed with mud.
Because they need soft, workable material, carpenter ants almost always target timber that has already been softened by moisture. Finding them is usually a sign of a hidden damp problem, such as a leaking gutter, a poorly flashed window, a damp subfloor or a section of decking that stays wet after rain. Left alone, an established colony steadily enlarges its galleries, and over years that weakens structural timber and leaves the underlying moisture issue to keep causing damage.
Carpenter Ants vs Termites
The two are often confused, but the damage they leave and the risk they carry are very different.
Carpenter Ants
Large, dark, with a pinched waist, bent antennae and, on winged forms, two pairs of wings of unequal size. They push out clean sawdust-like frass and cut smooth galleries. They excavate timber but do not eat it, and the damage is far slower than a termite attack.
Termites
Pale and soft-bodied with a straight, thick waist, straight antennae and, when winged, two pairs of equal wings. They build mud tubes, not frass piles, and pack their galleries with mud. They eat the timber and can cause serious structural damage quickly.
Termite control SydneyFinding the Nest
Successful carpenter ant control lives or dies on finding the nest, because spraying a trail of foraging workers achieves nothing while the queen keeps producing more. The colony is almost always centred on moist or decaying timber. Around Sydney homes the usual spots are damp window and door frames, wet subfloor bearers, the underside of decks and pergolas, and any area of cladding sitting behind a leaking gutter or downpipe.
Carpenter ants also keep satellite nests, which complicates the picture. The main nest with the queen is often outside the house, in a tree stump, a dead branch, a landscaping sleeper or a woodpile near the building, while satellite nests of workers set up inside the structure in warm, damp cavities. Trails running between the two, especially at dusk when the ants are most active, are the best clue to where the parent nest sits.
When we inspect, we follow the trails, tap suspect timber to listen for the hollow rustle of a disturbed colony, and check the moisture-prone zones first. Pinning down both the parent nest and any satellites is what lets the treatment reach the queen, and it is the difference between a lasting result and the ants simply reappearing a few weeks later.
Timing the inspection helps as well. Carpenter ants forage mostly after dusk and through the night, so trails that are hard to spot during the day become obvious with a torch in the early evening. Watching where a night-time trail disappears into a wall cavity, a deck bearer or a garden stump often reveals a nest that would otherwise stay hidden behind cladding. A short piece of honey or a scrap of protein left on the trail can also draw the workers out and show the direction they carry food, pointing straight back towards the colony.
Our Carpenter Ant Treatment
Four steps aimed at the queen and the conditions that let the colony settle.
Nest Location
We follow the trails and check moist timber, decks, frames and nearby stumps to pinpoint the parent nest and any satellite nests inside the structure.
Non-Repellent Treatment
A non-repellent product is applied to the galleries and trails. The ants cannot detect it, so they walk through it and carry it back to the nest before it acts.
Colony Transfer
Through grooming and food sharing the product passes from worker to worker and reaches the queen, so the colony collapses rather than just the ants you saw.
Moisture Correction
We identify the damp timber that drew them in and advise on the repairs and drying needed so the ants have no reason to return. See our ant control range.
Carpenter Ant Control Cost
Nest Location
A single accessible nest is quick to treat. A parent nest outside with satellites inside the walls takes more time to trace and treat.
Extent of Activity
A young colony clears faster than a large, well-established one spread across decking, frames and nearby garden timber.
Access & Repairs
Tight subfloors and high timber add time, and any moisture repairs needed to keep the ants away are quoted separately.
Get an Exact Price
Carpenter ant pricing depends on where the nest sits and how far the colony has spread, so it starts with an inspection. Call for a free, fixed quote.
