Rats in the Roof: Removal and Proofing Sydney

Scratching in the ceiling at night usually means roof rats have moved into the void. We remove them with secured baiting and trapping, clear the mess, then seal every entry point so they cannot get back in. Same day callouts across Sydney.

The Cause

Why Rats Choose Sydney Roof Voids

The rat you hear overhead is almost always the roof rat, also called the black rat, and it is built for exactly this. Roof rats are agile climbers with a long tail for balance, and they much prefer to nest up high rather than in a burrow at ground level. In Sydney they treat the suburban canopy as a highway, running along overhanging tree branches, fence lines, pergolas and even the power and phone cables strung between poles to reach a roofline without ever touching the ground.

Once they are on the roof, getting inside is easy. A rat can squeeze through a gap the size of a twenty cent coin, so a lifted roof tile, an unscreened eave vent, a gap where the fascia meets the gutter, or the hole where a pipe or cable enters the wall is all the opening they need. The roof void on the other side is close to ideal for them: it is dark, dry, warm, and safely out of reach of cats, dogs and foxes, which makes it a secure place to build a nest and raise young.

The void also sits right above the warmest part of the house and often runs the full length of the roof, giving rats room to move, plenty of soft insulation to burrow into for nesting, and quiet undisturbed hours to breed. With food never far away in kitchens, bins, compost and fruit trees, a Sydney roof cavity offers everything a colony needs, which is why the problem so often comes back unless the entry points are dealt with, not just the rats.

Diagnose It

Rat or Possum? Identify the Noise First

The right response depends entirely on which animal it is, so start by listening. Possums are protected native wildlife and must be handled differently.

Sounds Like a Rat

The noise: light, fast scratching and scurrying, plus gnawing on timber, and high squeaks. Quick pattering rather than heavy steps.

The timing: most active from just after dark and through the night as they forage and move between nest and food.

The weight: footsteps are so light they are easy to miss, and the sound skitters quickly across the ceiling.

What we do: secured baiting and trapping, then seal the entry points so more cannot follow.

Sounds Like a Possum

The noise: heavy, slow thumping, thuds and dragging, plus deep hissing or coughing calls at night.

The timing: usually a loud arrival around dusk and a departure near dawn, with quieter hours in between.

The weight: clearly heavier footsteps, like a cat walking overhead, not a light skitter.

What we do: possums are protected, so they are never baited. See possum removal.

How It Works

Our Roof Rat Removal Process

A structured plan that removes the rats, cleans up after them and stops the next lot getting in.

1

Void Inspection

We get into the roof cavity to confirm it is rats, find the nest and runs, and map every gap they are using to get in and out.

2

Baiting or Trapping

We place secured, tamper-resistant bait stations and snap traps along the active runs, kept well away from children and pets.

3

Carcass Management

We return to remove any dead rats and spent traps, dealing with odour early so a carcass is not left decaying in the ceiling.

4

Sanitising

We clean and treat the soiled areas to knock down droppings, urine and the scent trails that would otherwise draw rats straight back.

Keep Them Out

Proofing Your Roof Against Re-Entry

Removing the rats is only half the job. If the openings stay open, a new lot moves in within weeks. This is the part that actually solves it.

1

Seal gaps at the eaves, fascia, roof line and around pipe and cable entries with rodent-proof materials rats cannot chew through.

2

Screen weep holes, eave vents and any broken or lifted roof tiles so the openings let air move but keep rats out.

3

Cut back tree branches and shrubs so they no longer overhang or touch the roof and give rats a bridge across.

4

Fit guards or removed footholds where power and phone cables meet the house, one of their favourite roof routes.

5

Remove the food that draws them in, such as fallen fruit, open compost, unsecured bins and pet food left out overnight.

The Risk

Risks of Ignoring Roof Rats

The most serious risk of rats in the roof is fire. A rat's front teeth never stop growing, so it has to gnaw constantly to keep them worn down, and the electrical cabling running through your ceiling is a favourite target. Chewed wiring with the insulation stripped back is a genuine short-circuit and house fire hazard, and it is one of the reasons rodents are blamed for a meaningful share of unexplained electrical fires. It is not a problem to sit on while you decide what to do.

The damage does not stop at the wiring. Rats flatten and foul the ceiling insulation as they burrow and nest in it, which ruins its rating and leaves you paying more to heat and cool the house. They also gnaw structural timber, stored boxes, ducting and even plumbing and gas lines, and the repair bills add up quickly once a colony has been established for a while.

Then there is your health. Rats contaminate the roof space with droppings and urine, which can carry bacteria and parasites, and the dust from dried droppings can become airborne through ceiling gaps and downlights into the rooms below. They also bring in fleas and mites. A rat that dies inside a wall or ceiling adds a strong lingering odour that is hard to locate and remove, which is exactly why prompt removal, cleanup and proofing beats leaving them to it.

Questions

Rats in the Roof Sydney FAQ

Heavier thumps at night? It may be a possum. See possum removal or general rat control.

How do I know if it is rats or possums in my roof? +
Rats make light, fast scratching and scurrying with high squeaks through the night. Possums make heavy, slow thumps and dragging sounds with deep hissing calls, usually loud at dusk and dawn. Possums are protected and are never baited, so identifying the noise first decides the whole approach.
Is the bait safe around my children and pets? +
Yes. Bait is placed in secured, tamper-resistant stations set in the roof void along the rat runs, away from living areas. Your technician explains exactly where everything is placed, and in homes with pets we can lean more on trapping instead.
Why do I need proofing if the rats are already gone? +
Because the openings that let the first rats in are still there. Sydney roof rats are always looking for a warm, safe void, so an unsealed home is reinfested within weeks. Sealing the entry points is what turns a temporary fix into a lasting one.
What about a rat that dies in the ceiling? +
Carcass management is part of our process. We return to remove dead rats and spent traps so a body is not left decaying in the void, then sanitise the area. Trapping gives more control over recovery where odour is a particular concern.
How quickly can you come out? +
We offer same day callouts across Sydney. Given the fire risk from chewed wiring and the speed rats breed at, roof rats are worth acting on straight away rather than waiting to see if the noise stops on its own.
