A female can lay several egg sacs over a season, and each sac holds a couple of hundred eggs, so a quiet corner that had one spider in November can hold a small population by February.
Their bite is medically significant, which is the honest reason to take them seriously rather than shrug them off. A redback bite can cause intense, spreading pain, sweating, nausea and muscle weakness, and while modern first aid and hospital care mean deaths are extremely rare now, young children, elderly people and pets are the most vulnerable. Redbacks are not aggressive and will not chase anyone, but they bite in self-defence when a hand slips into a glove, reaches under furniture or grabs a stored toy where a spider is sitting.
